Legislators in Springfield are working through the final four weeks of their session, with a scheduled adjournment date of May 31. Two significant issues remain unresolved: passing a Fiscal Year 2026 budget and addressing a $770 million shortfall for public transit systems including Metra, PACE, and the Chicago Transportation Authority.
Senator Don DeWitte emphasized the need for fiscal responsibility in budget discussions and aims for an equitable solution to the transit funding issue. "There are varying levels of confidence on whether or not we will have an approved FY26 budget in place by the end of May," he noted.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has returned to Springfield seeking financial support from the legislature. Senator DeWitte criticized Johnson's requests, stating that "one familiar theme accompanies these requests: He wants suburban and downstate taxpayers to foot the bill." A press conference was held by DeWitte and fellow senators to oppose requiring taxpayers outside Chicago to pay for what they describe as poor financial decisions by Mayor Johnson.
Additionally, new federal identification requirements are set to take effect on May 7, 2025. Individuals over 18 will need a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification for domestic flights and certain federal facilities. However, this is not necessary for driving or voting.
Senator DeWitte is also hosting various community events, including a pet adoption fair in St. Charles on May 10, partnering with Anderson Humane. Other events include prescription drug drop-off days, traveling office hours at local libraries, property tax seminars, and document shredding services.
In other news from Springfield, Governor JB Pritzker’s proposed budget is facing criticism from Republicans who argue it includes unnecessary tax hikes amid Illinois' already high tax burden. They express concerns about economic growth impacts and emphasize standing up for working families.
A recent ceremony honored fallen law enforcement officers and K-9s in Springfield. The event paid tribute to those who lost their lives serving Illinois communities. Senator DeWitte expressed his support for law enforcement officers' service and sacrifices during this solemn occasion.
