May is recognized as National Bike Month, highlighting the benefits and practicality of biking as a commuting option. In alignment with National Bike to Work Week, which runs from May 12 through 18, St. Charles is showcasing its Director of Information Systems, Larry Gunderson, a committed cyclist who integrates biking into his daily routine.
Gunderson, a resident of Batavia, commutes by bicycle from spring to fall when the longer days afford more daylight for travel. His journey covers six miles each way from Batavia to the Century Station building near City Hall in St. Charles. For nearly 25 years, Gunderson has adopted cycling as a primary mode of transport. He remarks, "I like the outdoors, but I sit behind a desk most of the day, so getting outside as much as possible is important to me... I get my exercise and commute in at the same time. If I can avoid using my car, I do — that's always been my mindset."
Cycling offers a wide range of benefits, not only supporting Gunderson's personal well-being but also contributing to a cleaner environment and enhancing the local economy. "Culturally, St. Charles is a bike-friendly town," Gunderson states. He attests to feeling more energized and positive on days he arrives at work via bike, claiming a physical and mental boost.
Gunderson advises prospective cyclists to prepare and evaluate whether cycling is feasible for them, considering factors such as distance, schedule, lifestyle, and safety. He suggests, “I’d never suggest someone start biking to work without thinking it through.”
Challenges such as unpredictable weather and personal errands are inherent with biking. Gunderson shares his own experiences with the weather, recalling severe rainstorms: “If you're bike-riding, the biggest challenge is working around the weather."
He underscores the importance of safety in cycling, relying on the Fox River Trail as a safe and scenic route, saying, “The Fox River Trail is amazing.” Gunderson sees it as a fortunate opportunity to engage with nature while commuting.
St. Charles invites cyclists to participate in Bike to Work Week by sharing their biking experiences on social media, encouraging community engagement and awareness.
