Devin Corbett, chairman of the Aurora Township Republicans, said that although the Homeschool Act is currently stalled, it has initiated a significant grassroots movement. He made this statement to the Kane County Reporter, emphasizing that liberty-minded Illinoisans should remain politically active.

"The Homeschool Act may be paused, but the broader fight for liberty in Illinois is still on," said Corbett. "Homeschool families proved that when people are informed and engaged, they can punch well above their weight. Their efforts should be a wake-up call to every citizen tired of overreach. This episode shows that when Republicans choose to act, life in Illinois improves--let's keep it going!"

According to Capitol News Illinois, HB 2827 missed a procedural deadline. However, sponsor Representative Terra Costa Howard maintains that the bill remains active as she considers lawmakers' suggestions. The proposed legislation would require parents to file a declaration of intent and permit officials to request lesson plans during truancy investigations. This has led to strong opposition, particularly from Christian homeschooling groups who have celebrated its delay. Minority leaders and major editorial boards have also voiced concerns about potential overreach and harm to families leaving inadequate public schools. Costa Howard has requested an extension for the bill.

The Homeschool Act proposes creating a Homeschool Declaration Form for homeschool administrators to submit information indicating a child's enrollment in a homeschool program. It states that students enrolled in such programs without notifying the public school or district with this form would be considered truant, with penalties applicable. The act also outlines requirements for homeschool administrators and programs along with reporting obligations.

The National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI) reported that homeschooled students score 15–25 percentile points higher on standardized tests compared to their public school counterparts. Additionally, 78% of studies favor homeschoolers academically over traditionally schooled peers. NHERI found no significant correlation between homeschooled students' success and parental education level or family income. Furthermore, homeschooled students tend to perform above average on the SAT and ACT exams, leading to increased college recruitment.

Corbett was first elected as Chairman of the Aurora Township Republican Party in 2024. According to the organization’s website, he is "focused on boosting Republican voter turnout, growing the Party’s membership, and communicating the Party’s positions on issues that matter to Aurora Township voters."
