FOIA Request Sent to Kane County Sheriff Regarding Immigration Detainer Records on January 29, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Kane County Sheriff's office on January 29, 2025. The request, made by us at the Kane County Reporter, sought records pertaining to persons committed to county jails who have had an Immigration Detainer issued against them by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency since January 29, 2024.

As a media organization dedicated to comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe that access to such public records is crucial in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

The requested documents are expected to shed light on the intersection of local law enforcement and federal immigration policy within Kane County. As we continue our reporting efforts, we anticipate these records will provide valuable context and data for our ongoing coverage of this issue.

We have requested these records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140, preferably in electronic format. Given our role in disseminating information to the public as a media organization, we also requested a fee waiver for this information.

We await a response from the Kane County Sheriff's office and will keep our readers updated on any developments regarding this request.
