Senator Donald P. Dewitte | Illinois State Senator
Senator Don DeWitte of Illinois recently reaffirmed his commitment to both the Second Amendment and public safety. He expressed concern over the rising domestic violence-related deaths in Illinois, many involving firearms. While he attributes this trend partly to recent criminal justice reforms, he acknowledges the need for thoughtful solutions.
One legislative effort is "Karina’s Law," which addresses domestic violence cases involving firearms. The law allows temporary firearm removal in situations where a judge identifies an immediate threat of violence following a protective order. Senator DeWitte emphasized that the bill includes strong judicial oversight and ensures due process, stating: "No firearms may be removed unless a judge finds that there is an imminent threat of serious bodily harm or death."
The legislation also permits temporary measures for firearm removal and provides options for transferring firearms to relatives, ensuring they are not permanently seized. Additionally, false statements made during petitions can lead to perjury charges.
Senator DeWitte also joined Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias and other lawmakers to propose Senate Bill 91, aimed at modifying driving test requirements for senior citizens in Illinois. The bill seeks to increase the age at which drivers must take a behind-the-wheel test from 79 to 87, aligning with regulations in other states. A study by the Illinois Department of Transportation found lower crash rates among drivers aged 70 and older compared to younger age groups.
Under SB 91, drivers aged 79-80 would visit DMV facilities for vision tests without taking a behind-the-wheel test unless there's a violation on their record. Drivers aged 81-86 would renew their licenses every two years with similar testing requirements, while those aged 87 and older would continue annual renewals including all necessary tests.
Additionally, Senator DeWitte's "Valentines for Seniors" card drive continues this year across the 33rd District. Residents can send cards until February 7, which will be delivered personally by his office staff.
Lastly, Senator DeWitte was active within his district last week, attending events such as the DuPage County legislative breakfast and engaging with local officials at conferences focused on public transit.
