State Representative Dan Ugaste (R-Geneva) is taking action to address the dangers posed by highway protests by proposing a bill that would introduce stricter penalties for those who block traffic during demonstrations. Ugaste's initiative comes in response to recent events, including protests on the Kennedy Expressway near O’Hare Airport, which highlighted the risks and disruptions caused by such actions.

"In light of the protests cutting off traffic on the Kennedy Expressway near O’Hare Airport this morning, it’s another reminder how dangerous and disruptive protests can be when they block roads," expressed Rep. Ugaste, emphasizing the need to criminalize such activities and hold individuals accountable for endangering others and impeding emergency services.

Highlighting the critical implications of blocking highways, Ugaste raised concerns about the potential consequences on public safety. "What happens when an ambulance can’t get through? What happens when a fire truck is delayed? Lives are at stake. This behavior is dangerous, and it is ridiculous that we allow it," he stated firmly.

Expressing disappointment in the response of the Governor to the protests, Ugaste called for decisive action to address the issue. "We do not have to be respectful of protestors who break the law. The Governor should act swiftly and justly, sending the State Police to physically remove these individuals," urged Rep. Ugaste.

The recent protests near O’Hare Airport led to significant travel disruptions, with individuals abandoning their vehicles on the blocked roadway and having to walk with their luggage to reach the airport. The incident, which lasted for an hour during a peak travel period, underscored the severity of the public safety concerns associated with highway blockades.

As Rep. Ugaste pushes for stiffer penalties for those involved in obstructing highways during protests, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of all individuals on the roadways and preventing disruptions that could jeopardize emergency responses and public well-being.
