Nominations Sought for the Mayor's Awards for Historic Preservation

Elgin, IL - Nominate an Elgin community member, group or organization for a 2024 Mayor’s Award for Historic Preservation by 5 p.m., Friday, February 23. Download a nomination form, which may also be picked up at City Hall, 150 Dexter Court. 

The Mayor’s Awards recognize those who lead a preservation project, save one or more historical properties, educate and promote an awareness of Elgin’s heritage, conduct creative historic projects relating to archival or object collections, or maintain a continuous cultural or historical organization for 50 years or more.

In addition to the Mayor’s Awards, four special awards may also be presented:

•    Mayor George Van De Voorde Award

Given to an individual recognizing the continuing vigor, imagination and persistence in preserving Elgin's heritage.

•    William Stickling Award 

Honors achievements in the adaptive reuse of industrial and commercial buildings. 

•    Artisan Award 

Recognizes the exemplary work of a contractor, craftsperson or artisan in the preservation and restoration of Elgin’s architectural heritage.

•    Henry Jensen Award 

Recognizes extraordinary exterior and/or interior rehabilitation of work completed within the past year.

The annual Mayor’s Awards for Historic Preservation are presented during National Preservation Month. Award winners will be honored at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 7. Location details will be shared closer to the event. 

The awards provide an opportunity to recognize local residents, community members and groups while also educating about Elgin’s unique architecture, neighborhoods and history. Award recipients are selected by the Elgin Heritage Commission, a resident's advisory commission that promotes the protection and preservation of Elgin’s architectural, historic and cultural resources.
