Aris Garcia, a candidate for the 49th House District, has expressed his apprehension about Chicago transforming into a hub for illegal immigration. He pointed out the influx of migrants extending into the city’s suburbs and urged federal and state lawmakers to promptly address this issue.
“As an immigrant who champions LEGAL immigration, I stress the need to protect our families,” Garcia said on Facebook. “I call on federal and state lawmakers to address this issue, urging a halt to undocumented and uncontrolled migration.”
“It’s time to close the borders and safeguard our towns.”
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson brought attention to the migrant crisis during an interview on Fox News. He requested significant financial assistance from President Joe Biden as over 20,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in Chicago since August 2022. Johnson requested $15 billion from the nation to aid these immigrants while Illinois’ congressional Democrats sought $10 billion. In late November, Johnson expressed gratitude for the federal government's technical support in providing work authorization for a pathway to sustainability. However, he emphasized that without substantial investment from the federal government, efforts towards sustainability would not be feasible not only for Chicago but also for the entire country. He criticized Texas' actions saying "sending buses all over the state of Illinois and all over the country is reckless and quite frankly, is dangerous."
Garcia is a first-generation American who immigrated from Germany and graduated from Central Florida Aerospace Academy. On his campaign website, Garcia stated that he is running for State Representative because he believes Democrats have failed our children and are actively undermining opportunities for middle and lower classes. He pointed out the falling academic standards in his district.
"Currently, high school students in our district are falling behind drastically, with approximately three out of four students not proficient in reading, writing, and/or mathematics," Garcia noted on his website. "I take a hard stand against politicians who treat their office like a personal piggy bank and forsake the needs of the people."
The 49th District includes parts of Batavia, West Chicago, South Elgin, Wayne, Bartlett and portions of Aurora and Geneva. It is currently represented by State Rep. Maura Hirschauer (D-Batavia). She has also declared her candidacy for the Democratic primary scheduled on March 19 to represent the district, according to Ballotpedia.
