Elgin to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with "Canta Con Orgullo" Event

Elgin, IL - The City of Elgin is proud to announce its inaugural Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with “Canta con Orgullo" (Sing with Pride), taking place on Saturday, September 16, at Festival Park. This exciting event is a collaboration between the City of Elgin, Friends of Masons and the Gail Borden Library, both known for their remarkable Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.

“Canta Con Orgullo” promises a day filled with cultural diversity and entertainment. The festivities kick off with a car caravan at 1:30 p.m. Cars will begin staging at the former Sherman Hospital parking lot, 850 Center Street, at 11:00 a.m. and head south along Douglas Ave from Slade Ave to Fulton St. The caravan, led by Friends of Masons, will showcase the vibrant diversity and traditions of the Hispanic community in Elgin.

The opening ceremony, hosted by the Gail Borden Public Library and emceed by Elisa Lara, will feature traditional costumes and various performances starting at 3:30 p.m. The opening ceremony includes the traditional Grito, musical performances by talents such as Andrea Michel, José Diaz, Xitlali "La Chaparrita de Oro," and a quartet from the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, ballet folklorico performances by Macehualitzli and other Mexican traditions setting the tone for an unforgettable day.

After the opening ceremony, live musical performances will take the stage at 5:30 p.m. with Somos Colombia as the opening act followed by the salsa band, Trabuco. The headliner for the evening is America's #1 Selena tribute band, Amor Prohibido, performing all of Selena Quintanilla's greatest hits. The event will conclude with AYOO, a brotherly DJ duo native to Chicago, providing the soundtrack to a spectacular fireworks display at approximately 9:20 p.m. Highlights include an interactive Frida Kahlo sculpture, lotería games, Alebrijes, themed food and drinks, and much more.

"This event reflects the city of Elgin’s commitment to embracing and celebrating the rich cultural tapestry of the Hispanic community. We invite everyone to join us on September 16 for a day of music, dance, and tradition that will showcase the vibrancy and diversity of Elgin's Hispanic heritage,” said Cultural Arts and Special Events Director, Amanda Harris.

A variety of food vendors will be located on Grove Street adjacent to Festival Park starting at 3:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to make the most out of this all-day celebration. Admission to this event is free, but please note that outside alcohol and pets will not be allowed at the concert and fireworks.

For those driving to the event, street parking and free parking in lots and decks throughout the downtown area are available for free. However, due to street closures for the caravan, the public is advised to arrive early. For a map of downtown parking, visit cityofelgin.org/parking.
