Kane County Energy and Environmental Committee met July 14.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

1. Call To Order

Madam Chair Bates called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM.

Meeting Minutes July 14, 2023

Envir. & Wtr. Res. Dir. Wollnik briefly summarized the following resolution. (Allan* arrived - 9:02 AM)

A. Authorizing a Budget Adjustment for Sustainability Manager Salary for the Department of Environmental & Water Resources

7. Recycling/Solid Waste (C. Ryan)

A. Recycling Options: Solar Panels and Lithium-ion Batteries

Recycling Res. Coord. Ryan provided a presentation on the recycling process of solar panels and lithium-ion batteries. She spoke on the various components of solar panels and how each one can be disposed of properly, which may prove to be difficult. Much discussion ensued. She listed various items that utilize lithium-ion batteries. She presented the anatomy of the battery and which components can be recycled. She spoke on various recycling processes, such as heat and chemical breakdown. Discussion ensued.

Ryan provided a number of program updates, including on-site kiosks for items that may be otherwise difficult to dispose of. She announced that there will be a Recycling Extravaganza event on July 22, 2023 at 540 S. Randall Road from 8:00am to 12:00pm. This event will focus on items such as light bulbs,

electronics, books, batteries, and aerosols.

8. Sustainability (J.Wollnik)

A. Sustainability Update Presentation

Envir. & Wtr. Res. Dir. Wollnik provided updates on the solar panel installation project at the Judicial Center. She presented progress photos and detailed upcoming steps to completion. Discussion ensued regarding solar installation via the www.solarswitch.com/kanecounty website. She announced that the Climate Action Implementation Plan team will meet on July 20, 2023. B. Tree Protection Ordinance Update, Karen Miller

Dev. Exec. Planner Miller noted that she will be bringing tree preservation information to the Energy & Environmental Committee as it becomes available. Discussion ensued.

9. New Business

Committee member Young discussed the fires in Canada and how it has affected our local air quality. Discussion ensued.

10. Chairs Comments

Madam Chair Bates spoke on the effects of climate change. Additional discussion ensued.
