City of Batavia Historic Preservation Commission met July 6.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

1. MEETING CALLED TO ORDER

Chair Bus called the Historic Preservation Committee (HPC) meeting to order at 5:00pm.

2. ROLL CALL

Members Present:

Chair Bus; Vice-Chair Barraza; Commissioners Alderson, Saam and Koc.

Members Absent:

N/A

Also Present:

Jeff Albertson, Building Commissioner; Scott Buening, Director of Community & Development; Mayor Schielke; Laura Newman, City Administrator; Ellyn Theis, Recording Secretary.

3. ITEMS REMOVED/ADDED/CHANGED

No items are removed, added or changed.

4. MATTERS FROM THE PUBLIC (NOT ON THE AGENDA)

No additional matters from the public.

5. COA Review: 160 First Street - Hearth & Hammer

2” deep pan lighting with acrylic letters for the exterior of the building. Andy Kenny, co-owner of Hearth & Hammer, noted the intended light fixtures to be a reference to older-style lighting. Applicant is Aubrey Sign Co., 1847 Suncast Lane.

MOTION: To recommend approval of COA as presented

6. COA Review: 513 Shabbona Trail - Congressional Church of Batavia Fence

Current fencing is roughly 20 years old. New tongue and groove vinyl fencing to be sited in the same location as current existing. Playground and merchant metals sheet was distributed. The fence is noted to be a tan, opaque, low-maintenance option that is easy to clean.

MOTION: To recommend approval of COA as presented

7. COA Review: 222 South Batavia Avenue - Calvary Church Roof Replacement

Applicant is ASI Construction. No representative available at the point of meeting.

8. COA Review: 131 C. Flinn Street - Grainology Brewstillery

Applicants Michael Read and Jason Kelly, owners of Grainology Brewstillery propose building exterior and facade improvements, including the addition of 2 handicap parking spaces, the removal of exhaust fans and installation of a fresh air intake system. Jeff Albertson noted that the west facade is not very visible to the public. Landscaping changes pending land survey.

MOTION: To recommend approval of COA as submitted

9. COA Review: 400 Shumway Ave. - City of Batavia

Applicant is Jerry Ruth of Trotter and Associates. Pending demolition of the Batavia Food Pantry once it is relocated. Headworks building will be erected in the place of the Batavia Food Pantry in a style that mirrors the Wastewater Plant. Jeff Albertson noted that since the building is non-contributing, the demolition can be fast-tracked. Saam references NCS Code #8, as the building is relative to the betterment of the community.

MOTION: Move to approve demolition based on criteria #8 for betterment of community

10. COA Review: BMO Bank

Applicant is Doyle Signs. BMO Bank is removing the “Harris” from their brand and as such is seeking to remove “Harris” from the exterior of the building located at 155 West Wilson Street.

MOTION: To recommend approval of COA as submitted

11. Discussion: 113 South Batavia Ave., Facade improvements (JT’s Tavern)

Owners Bob and Jeremy in attendance to represent JT’s Tavern. Seeking to bring the condition of the building back to an era prior to 1985. Unsure of the condition of the brick behind the wood. Noted that the building had suffered significant neglect on the interior and exterior from 2004 to current. Planning to replace the rotted wood and restore the exterior to the original grey color.

13. Quorum Matters

Chair Bus notes consistent attendance from the current 5 members, but is seeking additional members so meetings aren’t canceled as frequently. Saam requests 2 additional members to be added to the committee. Scott Buening notes that the committee needs an architect, which has been difficult to obtain. Mayor Schielke notes that there will be one HPC member added at the CoW meeting on July 11th.

There being no other business to discuss, Chair Bus asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting at 6:28pm. All were in favor. Motion carried.
