At its Jan. 12 meeting, the Village Board of Huntley voted to approve a feasibility study on installing a roundabout at the intersection of Kreutzer and Huntley-Dundee roads.

This intersection has been the cause of many crashes over the last few years and the board is trying to determine if a roundabout might make it safer.

“During the ten-year period of 2012 through 2021, there were a total of 48 crashes. One of those was a fatality and five had incapacitating injuries," said Timothy Farrell, director of Public Works and Engineering. "Staff has identified two potential solutions to improve this intersection. The first solutions should be considered an interim alternative that would involve pavement widening and a left-turn deceleration lane from northbound Huntley Dundee Road onto westbound Kreutzer Road. The estimated cost for this improvement is about $500,000, not including any right-of-way acquisition that may be necessary. A second, more permanent solution would include a roundabout.”

There was some public comment by a resident who lived near the intersection who urged the board to put up an intersection light instead of a roundabout.

Christopher B. Burke Engineering will conduct the roundabout feasibility study.

The board also approved making an agreement with Christopher B. Burke Engineering to design a lighting scheme for the intersection of Route 47 and Kreutzer Road as a transition from roadway to intersections. The village entered into this agreement for $116,000.

The board also  approved three different portions of its 2023 street lighting program. The motions waived the competitive bidding process and accepted contracts for LED street light replacement throughout the village. This included almost $400,000 worth of LED traffic lights, a trailer-mounted impact attenuator, and engineering services. The city budgeted $920,000 for this program in FY2023. The board was told this program is ongoing and will save the village in repair and energy costs in the future.
