ONORING THE LEGACY OF THE REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING: The City of Aurora will host the 38th annual Aurora MLK Ceremony - “Be a Drum Major for Justice, Equity, and Mentorship” - at 6 p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2023 at East Aurora High School.
The ceremony will be an evening of empowerment and action with youth performances, special awards, exciting community announcements, and insightful remarks from the incomparable Star Jones.
An attorney, former New York City homicide prosecutor, best-selling author, Emmy-nominated TV host, and the first Black person to have a court television show, Star Jones has been on our TV screens for three decades, offering a fresh perspective to the day’s most talked-about crime, justice, political, and sociological issues. She was personally chosen and mentored by Barber Walters to be one of the original co-hosts of The View, where she stayed for nearly a decade. Jones is the past president of the International Association of Women and is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. A sought-after speaker, she is an advocate for women’s rights, equity, inclusion, and youth mentoring.
With youth as a focal point of the event, nominations are also open for the 2023 MLK Service Above Self Leadership Award for elementary, middle school, high school, and college students who demonstrate Dr. King’s commitment to service.
Nominations for the youth awards and general required registration are available at www.aurora-il.org/MLK .
