At the Dec. 12 meeting of the Geneva Community School District Board of Education, the board voted on the final version of its 2022 tax levy.
Although the district was not asking for a high enough levy rate to require a public hearing, it still had one for the sake of transparency and communication. The board had to approve and submit its levy request to the county before the deadline at the end of December, and it will receive its levy extension in spring of 2023.
"We did the truth in taxation, which requires that we provide public notice that was through the newspaper to let everyone know that we'll be holding that hearing that we had previously held," Todd Latham, the assistant superintendent for business operations, said. "We received board input from the Board of Education, an opportunity for me to receive the input from the board, as well as input from the community. There was the new public law that required us to state cash reserve balances at levy hearings and that all funds would be stated during the levy hearing presentation. And then those items were completed at the Nov. 4 meeting"
Latham gave an overview of the tax levy. He explained that the proposed request for the 2022 levy is a 4% increase from the previous year, with an estimated tax receipt of $96,371,530, which will be an increase of $3,021,347 from 2021.
The levy is the main funding for all of the district’s operations and the money will be distributed to all the main funds as the district has estimated its need. No community members commented during the public hearing and the board unanimously passed the levy for its final approval.
