Former Illinois state representative Allen Skillicorn is demanding answers on behalf of the American people amid growing chatter about leaked excerpts from a July phone call President Joe Biden had with then-Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, wherein Biden pushes Ghani to advance the “perception” of stability in the region.
According to Reuters, which received a leaked transcript of the call, the conversation in question took place around the same time Biden was ordering a withdrawal of troops from the region.
"I need not tell you the perception around the world and in parts of Afghanistan, I believe, is that things are not going well in terms of the fight against the Taliban," Biden said on the call. "And there is a need, whether it is true or not, there is a need to project a different picture."
Critics are now blasting Biden, claiming he knowingly mislead the nation with promises of a "safe and orderly" exit out of Afghanistan.
“Release the full transcript of Biden’s call,” Skillicorn posted on Twitter.
Still others are now comparing the conversation between the two world leaders to the 2019 phone call former President Donald Trump had with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, wherein the Ukrainian president was urged to investigate Biden and his son Hunter. The call ultimately led to Trump's second impeachment, Fox News reported.
With the U.S.’ military withdrawal from the region, it's unclear how many Americans and Afghan allies are still stranded in the region.
When directly questioned about the phone call, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki refused to discuss the call, according to Fox News.
"I'm not going to get into private, diplomatic conversations or leaked transcripts of phone calls," she said.
