City of Batavia City Council Met May 3.

Here is the minutes provided by the council:

1. OATH OF OFFICE

Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser administered the oath of office to newly elected officials: Mayor, Jeffery Schielke; City Clerk, Kate Garrett; Aldermen: Jennifer Baerren, Christopher Solfa, Leah Leman, George Ajazi, Tony Malay, Mark Uher, Nicholas Cerone, Sarah Vogelsinger

2. MEETING CALLED TO ORDER

The Mayor called the meeting to order at 8:21.

3. ROLL CALL

All Present at roll call

Aldermen (by ward) in attendance in person: Baerren (1), Solfa (1), Wolff (2), Leman(2), Chanzit (3), Ajazi (3), Knopp (4), Malay (4), Beck (5), Uher (5), Cerone (6) Russotto (6) Vogelsigner (7) and Miller (7)

4. RECOGNITION

Outgoing Aldermen Michael O’Brien, Martin Callahan, Elliot Meitzler, Drew McFadden; City Clerk Ellen Posledni And City Treasurer Gerald Miller

Motion by Ald. Chanzit, seconded by Ald. Knopp, to recognize outgoing Aldermen O’Brien, Callahan, Meitzler, McFadden; Clerk Posledni, Treasurer Miller. Motion carried 14 yea/ 0 nay/ 0 absent.

Ald. Chanzit suggested that each outgoing Alderman be offered the opportunity to make a parting address to the Council.

Former Alderman O'Brien addressed the Council.

Former Alderman Callahan addressed the Council.

Former Alderman Meitzler addressed the Council.

Former Alderman McFadden addressed the Council.

5. ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT

City Administrator Newman delivered her report.

The Councilroom has an installation of two new plaques commemorating the service of all known officers of the Batavia Police Department since 1856. She noted the plaques were designed by current members of the Department and the project was initiated at the suggestion of Ald. Meitzler and Ald. Callahan.

7. OTHER BUSINESS

Resolution 21-046-R Jennifer Fox as Treasurer (LN)

Mayor Schielke brought an appointee for treasurer to the Council for approval. He recommended Jennifer Fox as an experienced and valued member of city staff, capable of filling the position of treasurer. The position has been held by Gerald Miller since 1973 and stands vacant after his retirement.

Motion by Ald. Chanzit, seconded by Ald. Cerone, to approve the appointment of Jennifer Fox as Treasurer. Motion carried 14 yea/ 0 nay/ 0 absent.

Discussion ensued regarding the selection of Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of the Council Committees.

9. MAYOR'S REPORT

Mayor Schielke delivered his report.

The new council may face pressure with adjustments in the federal and state financial landscape.

A number of new restaurants have opened recently in town.

The high percentage of seniors in Batavia is an attraction to new businesses that serve a senior demographic.

10. ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Ald. Knopp, seconded by Ald. Malay, to adjourn. Motion carried by voice vote. The meeting adjourned at 9:16 p.m.
