BOM’ DA LOT, Aurora’s first street art exhibition space, will open during a weekend celebration of the Arts on August 28.
Aurora Public Art is creating a dedicated space for street art installations. Lot H, located at 14 Middle Ave., will be a rotating mural exhibition space. Artists can apply for a section of wall to paint in any style or content of their choosing. Murals will last approximately one year. Fresh murals will be painted annually, providing a vibrant, ever-changing community space.
Unlike most City of Aurora art projects, all permissions have already been obtained for the space. Artists will not be required to submit designs for approval prior to installation. The murals will be spontaneous street art.
“BOM’ DA LOT is a unique, original project in Aurora. The usual process of approving a mural requires months of planning and design reviews from multiple committees. That process is antithetical to street art, which is spontaneous,” states Public Art Director Jenn Byrne Evans. “Street artists have largely been shut out of public art opportunities, leaving a cultural gap in our community. We are delighted to have found a way to streamline the process and provide space for this important genre.”
Artists can learn more about BOM’ DA LOT and fill out the application by visiting http://bit.ly/lot_h_info. Preference will be given to Aurora area street artists, Aurora residents, and artists who participated in painting plywood murals in downtown Aurora during June 2020.
Outdoor Art Events on August 28
10+ murals will be installed during the last week of August. In addition to the BOM’ DA LOT murals, artists will be painting 6 utility box murals throughout, a Mexican Folk Art mural, and a Diversity in Technology mural. Aurora Downtown will also be installing a gateway mural in August.
On Saturday, August 28, a festival will coincide with live art installation events. Aurora Downtown will host Alley Art Fest from noon to 5 p.m. This grassroots festival features music, art, and activities for all ages. Dozens of local artists will sell their art and handmade goods.
Live painting will take place on several of the downtown murals on August 28, as well as all of the BOM’ DA LOT installations. Live music and entertainment will be available at several of the installation sites.
“August 28 will be an unbelievably wonderful time to visit downtown Aurora and revel in the Arts. Visitors can experience live painting, entertainment, and an art festival,” states Aurora Public Art director Jenn Byrne Evans.
All events are free and open to the public. Updates will be available on Aurora Public Art’s social media pages (@AuroraPublicArt on Facebook and Instagram)
