Senate Republican Leader Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods) honored Gold Star Mom Vonda Rodgers on Memorial Day. She briefly shared with McConchie how she lost her son on the “best night” of his life.

In 2017 Vonda Rodgers lost her son, Joshua Rodgers in his third deployment to Afghanistan. Sgt. Rodgers, 22, was killed during a mission to take down an ISIS leader. But she said it was a successful mission, “the men had to do what they had to do that night.”

“Thank you very much for telling his story,” McConchie told Rodgers. “I know that you will continue to do that, continue to honor his legacy. Thank you very much for coming down here and for continuing to do that for people all across the state.”

McConchie was at the Capitol on Memorial Day where a service was held to “honor the fallen from all across Illinois, all across the country who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we can be free and we can be here today.” McConchie had served nine years in the Army National Guard.

McConchie has also been working to push ethics reform.

"Ethics should not be a partisan issue, plain and simple," he said during a May 17 Senate Republican Caucus news conference. "We all have the common goal to make the system better to serve the people of Illinois, and there's no reason to not bring Republican ideas forward."

His caucus has also mentioned many times to be fair in creating the legislative maps.

“Every Illinoisan deserves to be represented in our democracy, an independent map drawn by the people, for the people, and not by politicians for politicians, is really the best way for people to have their voices heard,” McConchie said.

He has also been pushing to eliminate the sunset of the Invest in Kids program.

“Four or five years ago, I was very honored to be one of the legislators working on school funding reform,” McConchie said in a video posted to YouTube. “I was in the room when I said we cannot pass school funding reform unless we provide real choice for kids across the state who are in failing schools that they have the opportunity to leave and go to a school of their choice. That is the reason we’re here today, to fight to keep this program in place.”

McConchie and the GOP have been pressuring Gov. Pritzker to continue the Invest in Kids program and veto partisan-drawn legislative maps.
