Illinois lost 423,000 jobs last year amid the pandemic, marking its greatest job loss ever recorded. The state has also seen an exodus of residents moving to other states as a result of its poor economic status and high tax rates.
“We have to right our state's fiscal ship and become a leader in job creation to make Illinois a place where families can grow and thrive once again,” Rep. Dan Ugaste said.
Research released by California-based moving company Hire a Helper ranks Illinois’ emigration as the fourth highest in the country as the state saw a 40% greater population loss than the number of new residents the state has gained.
The moving agency also reported that 25% of nationwide moves were attributed to the pandemic, while 35% were due to financial difficulties, and one-third were made to be closer to family members. Moves delayed as a result of the pandemic led to a 30% year-over-year moving increase during the fall of last year.
United Van Lines and Atlas Van Lines both reported over 60% of Illinoisan moves were reported outside the state. Aside from its -6.9% job loss, the state has also seen a 35% small business closure and 40% greater losses than gains amid the pandemic, affecting every metropolitan area.
