City of Elgin issued the following announcement on Mar. 10.
This year’s New Works Program brings public art to a new canvas—storm drains. The Call for Art is seeking art that features images and messages to raise awareness about storm water and the importance of storm drains.
STORM DRAIN ART
For 2021, the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission is using the New Works Program to apply artwork to storm drains in Elgin. This new take on the program allows for up to 40 storm drains to be painted with images and messages that raise awareness about the important role of storm drains.
For Artists:
Applications are open to all artists of all levels, worldwide, but preference will be given to Elgin-based artists. A separate application must be completed for each separate artwork submission. There is no limit to the number of applications that may be submitted. Selected Artists shall receive an honorarium of up to $500. Artwork will be approved by the ECAC once the application has been submitted. The ECAC will review applications to ensure aesthetic quality, design, integrity, and to determine that the work is appropriate to the setting, architecture, and social context. The artwork should consist of exceptional quality and have an enduring value to the City. Selected artists will be notified in the spring of their application status.
For Residents and Businesses:
Those interested in having a storm drain painted in their neighborhood should apply here. A minimum of 3 neighbors in the area of the storm drain need to be listed on the application in support of the project. Residents and businesses that wish to see a storm drain painted in their neighborhood should complete this application. Selected applicants will be provided a template of the winning artwork, paint, and instructions on installation. If you are unable to facilitate the installation, assistance can be provided. There is no cost to the resident or business for this program. The painted storm drain will be listed on a public map. Locations will be limited to neighborhood areas; no major roads or thoroughfares will be allowed. It is expected that installation will begin in the summer.
