CITY OF GENEVA: Significant Fire Damages Geneva Township House

Fireroom

City of Geneva issued the following announcement on Feb. 14.

No one was injured after a single-family house was damaged by a fire Feb. 13 west of Peck Road in unincorporated Geneva Township.

The Geneva Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 6:14 p.m. at 0N760 Wenmoth Lane after a neighbor called 911 to report that there was a fire across the street. As the first unit arrived on the scene, heavy fire was showing from the south side of the home with a woman reported to be still inside the house. The initial response was immediately elevated to a Special Alarm and then to a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) first-level box alarm for additional manpower, equipment and resources.

Firefighters quickly located and rescued the woman and a dog from the home. The woman was transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva as a precaution.

Fire crews initiated an aggressive exterior and interior attack and brought the fire under control in about one hour.

Firefighters faced considerable challenges due to the extremely cold temperatures, no fire hydrants, deep snow, and icy roads, which all contributed to the need for additional fire personnel and equipment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The home sustained significant fire damage on the second floor, attic, and attached garage with smoke and water damage throughout the structure. Damage estimates still are being compiled, but the house has been deemed uninhabitable at this time.

Firefighters from Elburn, St. Charles, Batavia, West Chicago, Fermilab, North Aurora, Winfield, Bartlett, South Elgin, Kaneville, and the Fox River & Countryside fire departments assisted Geneva at the scene.

The Sugar Grove and Warrenville fire departments filled in the Geneva fire stations and responded to two other calls during the fire.

Additional support was provided by the Kane County Office of Emergency Management, Geneva Emergency Management Agency, Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Geneva Police Department, Blackberry and Geneva Townships, Commonwealth Edison, NICOR, and the Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force.
