Fresh off her narrow defeat in the Illinois state House's 49th District, Laura Curtis fears what could be next for Illinois.
“It’s clear that this is a Democratic stronghold and with (House Speaker) Mike Madigan being willing to pump all his money into the system and dispatch his minions, it’s really hard for Republicans to crack through,” Curtis told the Kane County Reporter shortly after falling short against Maura Hirschauer by a count of 28,172 votes (54%) to 23,992 (46%). “It pulled out all the stops to beat me with someone that hasn’t had a job for 12 years.”
A member of the North Aurora Village Board, Curtis touted herself throughout the campaign as a fiscal conservative committed to getting the state's financial house in order.
“We can’t hide from this any longer,” she said. “So many people already have one foot out the door and the only saving grace during this campaign season has been the defeat of the progressive tax. I’m more than a little disappointed that voters could figure out that Democrats now hold the House, Senate and governor’s mansion and we’re still in this predicament. I mean, why vote for more of them all over again?”
Curtis laments it all adds up to more trouble for Illinois.
“When all is said and done, I think Mike Madigan will stay in control and no problems will be solved,” she said. “Really, things will probably get even worse now that we also have the COVID-19 crisis to deal with. You’ve got more and more people already making their exit plans from Illinois.
