New Life Covenant Church in Elgin is preparing to give out 4,000 face masks for free this Saturday.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the May 16 giveaway will be a drive-in event. Organizers say the giveaway will start at 10 a.m. and last until 2 p.m. The drive-in will be located in the parking lot of New Life Covenant Church at 2250 W. Highland Ave. A church news release said that the event will be on a "first-come, first-served basis."
The church also says that each vehicle can receive four masks while supplies last.
“These masks alone will not prevent the spread of the (COVID-19), but they can help reduce transmission and help compliance with the governor’s order to wear a face-covering when inside indoor public places,” New Life Pastor Abi Raices said in the release. “We encourage people to continue washing their hands frequently, practicing social distancing, and following CDC guidelines.”
The church asks that people who want masks should stay inside their vehicles at all times.
