Kane County property owners received a 30-day reprieve from penalties normally imposed if they miss their property tax payment deadline.
The COVID-19 pandemic and economic shutdown prompted Treasurer David Rickert to propose a 30-day waiver of interest penalty for property owners who miss their first property tax installment, the Kane County Chronicle reported.
The measure is intended to aid taxpayers, some of whom have lost their jobs or have been furloughed because of measures taken to curb the spread of the coronavirus included closing many businesses and limiting what others can do.
The Kane County Board approved implementing this grace period, but it applies just to the first installment of property taxes for 2019, which is payable in the 2020 tax year. Property owners have a payment deadline of June 1 on that first installment. The waiver allows them to make a payment on or before July 1 without having to pay a late penalty or interest.
