3. Environmental (J. Wollnik)
Environmental/Water Resources Dir. Wollnik provided an update on the Stormwater Management Ordinance, water quality and stormwater basins. She presented information regarding sample testing at the bioreactor located on the Messner Corrron Forest Preserve. She discussed Grant opportunities. Dir. Wollnik provided a brief overview of a rain garden project at the Kane County Farm Bureau.
4. Recycling/Solid Waste (J. Jarland)
A. Presentation: Recycling Events
Referencing a PowerPoint presentation included in the agenda packet, staff Jarland shared highlights from the House Hold Hazardous Waste Collection Event in East Dundee. She estimated 500 households participated in the event. Staff Jarland promoted a Recycling Extravaganza on July 13, 2019 in St. Charles, a Historical Society Presentation in Big Rock on July 11, 2019 and an Agricultural Container Recycling event in Maple Park on August 28, 2019. The remaining 2019 recycling events were outlined. Staff Jarland provided a legislative update on the "Bag Bill" (the fee on plastic carry out bags). Discussion occurred regarding reusable bags.
5. Sustainability (J. Jarland)
A. Discussion: Solar Power Hour Announcement
Referencing a PowerPoint presentation included in the agenda packet, staff Jarland discussed Solarize Chicagoland. It is a purchasing program designed to assist participants in pooling their buying power to secure discounts for solar installation. Staff Jarland promoted two Solar Power Hour events in Kane County on July 9, 2019 & August 13, 2019. Discussion occurred regarding residential solar use in Kane County.
B. Future Energy Jobs Act – Mark Burger- Solar Consultant - Seven Generations Ahead
Mr. Burger provided a PowerPoint presentation included in the agenda packet. He discussed the Future Energy Jobs Act and the Solar Power Industry. “Seven Generations Ahead” has been working with Kane County in a variety of sustainability efforts, also providing education regarding solar power use. Mr. Burger reported the average residential Kane County customer uses 7,600- 10,000 kilowatts of electricity per year. He presented statistics on reusable energy in Illinois and predicted significant advances in solar capacity by the year 2020. Discussion occurred regarding the challenges and obstacles to solar power. Mr. Burger discussed potential legislation, the Path to 100 and the Clean Energy Jobs Act. He commented the cost of renewable energy has significantly dropped in recent years, while the demand has risen. Mr. Burger distributed literature regarding "Shopping for Solar" and "Community Solar".
C. Fabulous Fox! Water Trail Update
Referencing a PowerPoint presentation included in the agenda packet, staff Miller provided an update on the new website, the FabulousFoxWaterTrail.org. The website includes maps and information on access sites, dams and portaging along the Fox River. The Fabulous Fox! Water Trail brochure will continue to be distributed in the Chicago and Milwaukee regions during the paddling season. Staff Miller promoted the first of five Open Houses in Illinois and Wisconsin beginning in Kane County on June 17, 2019 regarding the new website.
