ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 50: Rep. Wheeler statement on passage of Graduated Tax amendment

Illinois State House District 50 issued the following announcement on May 27.

State Representative Keith R. Wheeler, R-Oswego, issued the following statement following the passage of legislation placing a constitutional amendment referendum to enact a graduated tax on the November 2020 General Election ballot:

“Fox Valley families and job creators cannot afford a graduated tax. There are no taxpayer protections in this amendment. There is no cap on what the highest rate could be. Illinois families already pay the highest combined state and local tax burden in the nation, including the second-highest property taxes in the nation. The graduated tax amendment offers no property tax relief. The most troubling aspect of the graduated tax is that the rates will be set by politicians in Springfield and subject to increase at any time. We cannot trust Springfield politicians with a blank check to raise our taxes over and over again. Enough is enough.”

The legislation is Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment #1. It was previously approved by the State Senate on May 1 along party lines in a vote of 40-19.
