CITY OF GENEVA: Shakespeare In The Park To Feature Taming Of The Shrew on July 7

West

City of Geneva issued the following announcement on June 12.

Cowboys and cowgirls will roam Geneva’s Island Park Saturday, July 7 when Stone Soup Shakespeare performs “The Taming of the Shrew.” This free performance starts at 6 p.m.

The ensemble will engage the crowd with song, dance, Shakespeare and may even invite an audience member or two to play along. Geneva’s Shakespeare In The Park performance is appropriate for all ages.

“I’m so excited for us as a company to engage with this ‘problem play’ because there is a real opportunity to offer a fresh perspective on Shakespeare’s text,” Director Eric Mercado said. “Despite its troubling moments, ‘Taming’ is outrageously funny and has so many zany and wonderful moments. No spoilers, but we definitely have some surprises planned. And who doesn’t love a good square dance?”

Stone Soup’s shows are “incredibly athletic,” Mercado said, which is part of what makes the performances engaging. In “Taming,” six actors bring more than 20 different characters to life by changing costumes, vocal qualities and physical appearance.

“The performance showcases the magic of live theater in a way that is truly special,” he said.

Now in its 12th year, Shakespeare in the Park is presented by the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission. Admission is free ($5 suggested donation) and seating begins at 5 p.m. The audience is encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic dinners to enjoy the Ravinia-style theater experience. Stockholm's will sell sandwiches, chips and drinks while Graham's Chocolates will be serving up ice cream.

The Geneva Public Library District will offer a preshow Shakespeare-inspired craft activity for elementary school-aged children at 5 p.m. at the park.

Island Park is located at the corner of State Street (Route 38) and Route 25 in Geneva. Free parking is available at the:

• Southeast corner of Route 25 and State Street;

• Metra commuter lot on Route 31 just south of the railroad bridge; and

• Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., which is just a short walk across the covered bridge to the park.

Stone Soup Shakespeare was founded in 2010.
