City of Aurora Youth Council met April 11.

Here is the minutes as provided by the council:

Members Present: Adam Pauley, Albert Rios, Diego Terrazas, Jyotsna Balmuri, Shashank Vege, Amanda DuVall, Ellen Sweeney, Ella Gonzalez, and Alonso Cisneros


City of Aurora staff present: Adrienne Holloway and Deanna Cross

1. Welcome & Introduction

Ellen Sweeney welcomed everyone.

2. Acceptance of Agenda

Adam approved the agenda and Alonso seconded. The motion was unanimously approved by voice vote.

3. Approval of Minutes

Adam approved the minutes as amended. Ella seconded. The motion was unanimously approved by voice vote.

4. Speakers

We have no speakers.

5. Project Ideas

Ella suggested that we participate in First Fridays. Jo suggested that we attend the Food Truck Festival on May 4th. Everyone expressed interest. Ellen suggest participating in the Aurora Pride Parade in June. Dr. Holloway suggested reaching out to Indivisible Aurora. Adam brought up going as private citizens and not as a Council due to controversial issues. Jo asked if we could be a part of the Memorial Day and Fourth of July parades. Dr. Holloway said she’d reach out to the Mayor’s Office about being a part of his unit. Ellen suggested AYC business cards. Ella brought up a team-building event. Shashank suggested an escape room. Jo suggested a going-away or welcome party in August for seniors and new members.

6. Committee Report

Albert said the Earth Day planning was going smoothly. He has posters ready. Albert decided on Earth Day being one part park clean-up and one part scavenger hunt. Albert said the park district would help out in providing tools. Albert says the event will kick off around 11 AM, but Youth Council should be present by 9:30 am. Alonso said that the date for the youth forum was varying a bit. Ellen said she reached out to Congressman Bill Foster and a member of his team said he was available on May 1st. Alonso said he had some trouble reaching out to the family/trauma services organization, so he will drop in on them to check their availability. Alonso said the EventBrite was made. Alonso said the cost of the room for the forum was $50. Alonso requested 3 microphones on top of the 1 microphone the venue would provide.

Ella motioned to allocate up to $150 of the AYC budget to Earth Day in addition to the $225 already spent on the tote bags. Adam seconded. The motion was passed unanimously. Adam motioned to allocate up to $150 of the AYC budget for the Youth Forum. Alonso seconded. The motion was passed unanimously.

7. Announcements

Ellen announced a Paint-Night Fundraiser at the Tiger Club for the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry on April 12th, 2018 from 6:30 to 9 PM. Adam announced that State Representative Stephanie Kifowit sponsored a bill that Neuqua Valley students wrote.

8. Adjourn

Diego motioned to adjourn, Alonso seconded.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:08 p.m.
