Analysis: 79 percent of Jefferson students fail annual tests

Elm 14

Academic results data released recently reveals 21 percent of Jefferson Middle School students are considered on track for the next grade level, according to a Kane County Reporter analysis of the latest Illinois schools report card.

The end-of-year tests known as the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC, are administered to third- through eighth-graders in Illinois, testing them in reading and math based on Common Core standards. A composite score combines the results of the subject tests.

Composite scores for Jefferson Middle School show about 19 percent met expectations and 2 percent exceeded them. Students whose results are in either category passed the tests and are considered prepared for the next grade level, college or work.

Another 35 percent approached expectations, 24 percent partially met expectations and 20 percent did not meet expectations. Students who scored in these categories are not ready for the next level of schooling, according to the test.

Test results at Jefferson Middle School, which enrolled 645 students in 2017, fell below state averages.

Statewide, 34 percent of students passed the test and 66 percent failed.

Of students statewide who passed, only five percent 'exceeded' expectations.
