Elgin School Board member Traci O’Neal Ellis should never have said what she said about the NFL's kneeling controversy, according to a press release from Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee).
"The people expect their elected officials to remain civil and respectful," Skillicorn said in the release. "These highly offensive and disturbing comments are neither. I strongly condemn Ellis’ comments comparing the flag to toilet paper.”
Ellis had posted a comment on her Facebook page in which she said the U.S. flag "means nothing more than toilet paper to me" in apparently supporting NFL players taking a knee during the national anthem. The post was screenshot and passed on by Jeanette Ward, another Elgin School Board member.

“Why did I post it?" O’Neal Ellis told television station WGN9. "Because I’m frustrated deeply frustrated.”
O’Neal Ellis reportedly received many hostile responses and a petition to get her fired from board has been started on thepetitionsite.com.
"I cannot be embarrassed by righteous truth," O’Neal Ellis wrote on her school board Facebook page. "Whether anyone wants to accept it or not, my experience in America is vastly different than that of white people. This is true for most people of color. Unfortunately, many people are arrogant enough to deny the lived experiences of black people."
