Analysis: Sales tax funded 2 percent of City of Geneva budget in 2016

The City of Geneva's local sales tax brought in $2,223,599 in 2016, according to Illinois State Comptroller revenue data. Geneva, population 21,495, relied on its local sales tax to contribute 2 percent of total revenue that year.

Geneva levies a 0.5 percent sales tax. The average of six suburbs in Kane County is 0.83. The high is 1.5 percent; the low is 0.5 percent.

Kane County Reporter analyzed the sales tax collections in six Kane County suburbs and found they generated a total of $13,067,304 in tax revenue in 2016. That was the equivalent of 4% spent by local government.
