Delivering decades of hands-on leadership and overall community familiarity to his new role, long-time Elgin Fire Department staffer David Schmidt will step up as the new fire chief for the city of Elgin come Nov. 18.
City officials praised Schmidt for his established track record.
“Dave exemplifies the long-tenured ‘working managers’ with proven performance and leadership that have become a hallmark of the city’s operations,” Rick Kozal, city manager, said, commending Schmidt and the department for continuing top-notch service while meeting financial challenges.
Schmidt draws on a strong and comprehensive background in public service. Having served on many civic committees and completed training and certification as an executive and chief fire officer, he is currently completing Chief Fire Officer certification from the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
“I am honored to work alongside the great men and women of the Elgin Fire Department,” Schmidt said. “It will be a privilege to continue leading the long-standing tradition of providing first rate service to the Elgin community by working collaboratively within the city and the region.”
Schmidt joined the Elgin Fire Department in 1989 and held the ranks of lieutenant, captain and assistant chief of operations. He currently directs budget, personnel, career development, training and the technology aspects of the station’s functions.
“I fully expect Dave will continue running into burning buildings once he has been sworn in as chief,” Kozal said.
