Expired and unused prescription medications can be safely disposed of with the Geneva Police Department 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday as the city participates in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency-sponsored National Drug Take-Back Day.

Residents will have an opportunity to clean out medicine cabinets, drawers and shelves of pills and patches during the event. Medications should be brought to the front desk records specialist at the Police Department, located at 20 Police Plaza.

Accepted medicines include prescriptions, samples, over-the-counter products, vitamins, pet medicine and non-controlled DEA drugs. The Police Department asks constituents to remove pills from their original containers and store in plastic bags, taking care to keep any personal information printed on labels or boxes separate from the drugs.

Certain items that cannot be accepted include liquids, ointments, thermometers, IV bags, sharps and needles, infectious waste, empty containers and substances that are classified as illegal or narcotics.

Geneva has participated in the annual event for six years. The process is free, anonymous and open to anyone in the area. The program helps to keep medications being flushed down toilets or sinks as well as keeping drugs from being used improperly.

Following the Oct. 22 event, the department will revert to its standard routine of accepting unused medication only from city residents.
