Geneva Cultural Arts Commission adds second downtown bike art piece

Jenkins bike rack sculpture

Fanciful yet functional fine art now graces downtown Geneva in the form of a bicycle rack sculpted by local resident and artist James Jenkins.

Situated on the southeast corner of State and Fourth streets and titled “A Unique Cycle,” the metal artwork allows cyclists to lock their bikes while simultaneously checking out an arrangement of alphabetical forms contained within the larger steel-gray colored shapes. It is the second in a series meant to promote the use of sculpture in downtown Geneva.

The city’s first such piece, fashioned by Weston Lambert in 2014, was titled “Welcome Rounds” and was installed at the northeast corner of Campbell and Third streets.

Funded by the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission, the $3,000 “Bike + Rack = Art” project included a $1,000 donation from the city’s Mill Race Cyclery.

At an Oct. 3 dedication ceremony, Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns thanked the commission, Mill Race Cyclery owner Bruce Heidlauf and artist Jenkins for their collaborative efforts to bring the unique bike rack to the community.

“This piece is a fun addition to Geneva's public art landscape [and] illustrates the incredible artistic talent that can be found in our city,” Geneva Cultural Arts Commission chairman Tim Vetang said.
