Encouraging residents to trim and tidy up, top off trees and cut back shrubs, Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner recently invited constituents to participate in the city’s first-ever Pride of the Neighborhood Program to solicit and show off local landscaping enhancements.
"As I travel throughout the city, I am reminded again and again (how) much pride so many of our residents take in beautifying their properties," Weisner said. "A well-maintained property can inspire a positive ripple effect in the neighborhood, and this program will honor those who set a standard of excellence."
To spark the competitive spirit, the city will offer awards in several categories, including curb appeal, best upgrade and best block.
Curb appeal will take overall appearance into consideration; upgrades will include notable changes, with “before and after” photos recommended.
The last category, “best block,” will recognize multiple lots in one block -- on either one or both sides of the street -- showing aesthetic improvements. All winners will earn certificates and other honors, to be awarded at an upcoming City Council meeting.
Aldermen will nominate five properties in each ward, with the final winner determined by both aldermen and the Weisner. Participation is voluntary; nominations are due by Tuesday. Residents can contact their respective aldermen for more information. Contact information can be found at www.aurora-il.org/aldermen or by calling the Aldermen's Office at 630-256-3020.
