Celebrate the great outdoors at Algonquin’s annual "Explore the Outdoors at It's Our River Day" from 1-4 p.m. on Sept. 17, at the downtown area’s Cornish Park, featuring cleanup activity, educational events and fun for all ages.

Sponsored by the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and the Village of Algonquin, the free event will offer interactive experiences with dozens of participating organizations appealing to a wide variety of constituents — from canoeing enthusiasts to library lovers.

Visitors will have a chance to witness a live water-rescue demonstration by Algonquin Lake in the Hills' Fire Protection District, help clean up the area to sustain its natural beauty with the Sierra Club and Prairie State Canoeists, and chat with the many exhibitors who will be on hand.

Prairie State Canoeists is one of the Midwest's largest paddling clubs. Its representatives will join colleagues from the Illinois Paddling Council, Friends of the Fox River and many other outdoor-oriented organizations.

Water Trailkeepers; Friends of the Fox River; Kane County Division of Environmental and Water Resources; the Village of Algonquin’s Water & Sewer and Parks & Forestry divisions; McHenry County Conservation District; the Land Conservancy of McHenry County; and McHenry County College Sustainability Center also will participate in River Day.

Algonquin Lake in the Hills' Interfaith Food Pantry-Victory Garden, University of Illinois Master Gardener Program and McHenry County Schools' Environmental Education Programs are also planning to participate.

Visitors can enjoy information and resources from the Algonquin Area Public Library District, Algonquin Rotary Club, Davey Tree Expert Company and Fox River Jeep Club as well.
