Residents in Geneva are encouraged to recycle their pumpkins after Halloween at the upcoming Pumpkin Smash event on Saturday, November 8. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Community Gardens at Prairie Green, located at Peck and Bricher roads.
The Pumpkin Smash is organized by the City’s Natural Resources Committee and the Geneva Park District. The initiative aims to prevent pumpkins from being sent to landfills. During the event, park district staff will till the smashed pumpkins into garden plots to enrich the soil.
Participants are asked to remove all decorations from their pumpkins before bringing them for recycling. This includes candles, yarn hair, stickers, googly eyes, and plastic accessories.
Food and warm drinks will be available for purchase from local vendors during the event.
The Community Gardens at Prairie Green operates as a partnership between the Geneva Park District, City of Geneva, and Forest Preserve District of Kane County. The gardens offer 131 rental plots and gardening classes for community members. Plots measure 20 feet by 30 feet and are open daily from dawn until dusk between April and October.
Returning gardeners can renew their plot rentals starting December 1. New gardeners may register for any remaining plots beginning February 1, 2026. More details about registration can be found on the Park District’s website.
Information about the Natural Resources Committee is available on the City’s website.
