Geneva Public Works will conduct a citywide fire hydrant flushing program starting in late October or early November. The maintenance work is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
According to the City, hydrant flushing helps improve water quality by removing rust and sediment from water mains and ensures that fire hydrants are functioning properly. The process is expected to last about three weeks, depending on weather conditions.
Residents are advised that the water remains safe to drink during the flushing period. However, if discoloration occurs, it is recommended to let faucets run for several minutes until the water clears. Residents should also try to limit water use when crews are working in their area and avoid doing laundry to prevent staining from rusty water. If laundry does become discolored, keeping it wet and using a rust-removing solution purchased locally is suggested.
The City will post signs in neighborhoods where flushing is underway and provide a progress map on its website. The start date of the program depends on the completion of painting at the Kirk Road water tower.
