The City of St. Charles will begin its fall hydrant flushing program on October 6, continuing through October 31. The process is part of routine maintenance for the city’s water distribution system and aims to reduce mineral buildup in water mains while ensuring that fire hydrants are operational for emergencies.

According to the city, hydrant flushing may temporarily cause water discoloration, even in homes outside the immediate flushing area. The discoloration is due to minerals being stirred up in the pipes. “Please note water is safe to use and consume during hydrant flushing. However, water may temporarily be rusty colored,” the city stated.

St. Charles has divided its service area into several zones for this activity: River Valley East & West, Northwest, Southwest, Northeast, and Southeast. Main Street (IL Rt 64) serves as the dividing line between north and south areas, while the Fox River divides east and west sections.

The schedule for hydrant flushing is as follows:

- River Valley East & West and Northwest: October 6–10

- Southwest: October 13–17

- Northeast: October 20–24

- Southeast: October 27–31

Flushing activities may begin as early as 5 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m., with signs posted in affected neighborhoods.

Residents are advised to limit water use during these periods if possible. If tap water appears discolored, it is recommended to wait until flushing has ended before running cold water from a bathtub or utility sink until it clears up or in ten-minute increments. Rust-colored water is considered safe but may stain laundry; residents should keep clothes wet if staining occurs and treat them with stain remover.

The city provides free stain remover at two locations: Public Works at 1405 S 7th Ave and City Hall’s reception desk at 2 East Main Street.
