Geneva residents are reminded to follow the city's water conservation ordinance as they maintain their lawns this summer. The ordinance allows the use of water sprinklers between 6 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on designated days throughout the year. Those with even-numbered street addresses can water their lawns on even-numbered days, while odd-numbered addresses can do so on odd-numbered days.
As warmer weather increases water demand, adherence to the ordinance is crucial for ensuring an adequate supply for all customers and the Geneva Fire Department in emergencies. Limiting lawn watering to specified hours helps aquifers and water towers recover during the day.
Residents may use a hand-held hose at any time for watering flowers, gardens, trees, shrubs, cars, lawns, and wading pools that hold up to 50 gallons.
A $25 permit from the Public Works Department at 1800 South St is necessary for those laying sod or watering seed. Sod and seed lawns can be watered for eight hours on the first day and from 6 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. over the following nine days before returning to the regular schedule.
For further information, residents can contact the Geneva Public Works Department Water Division at 630-232-1551.
