State Representative Dan Ugaste of Geneva has voiced strong criticism following the Governor's signing of the fiscal year 2026 state budget, which totals $55.2 billion and is noted as the largest in Illinois history.
In his statement, Rep. Ugaste highlighted concerns over the reliance on "one-time revenues and a billion dollars in tax hikes and fund sweeps." He expressed discontent with what he described as a lack of transparency in the budget process, stating that it involved "last-minute bills and amendments filed with no time for review or debate."
Ugaste also pointed out that the new budget fails to provide property tax relief, which he believes will further strain personal budgets and contribute to more families leaving Illinois. He mentioned the pause of a $43 million property tax grant relief program aimed at assisting school districts with high property tax rates and low real estate values.
The representative criticized certain allocations within the budget, specifically referencing "$40 million included for a new sports complex in Speaker Welch’s district," questioning whether such expenditures truly reflect necessary priorities.
Rep. Ugaste concluded by emphasizing that under Democratic control, life continues to become more expensive for Illinois families, with little relief available.
