Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has been sentenced to 7½ years in federal prison and fined $2.5 million for corruption charges, marking a significant downfall for the once-powerful politician. Madigan was convicted on counts of racketeering, bribery, wire fraud, and extortion following his indictment in 2022 after prolonged federal investigations. The case centered around dealings with utility company ComEd, where favorable legislation was allegedly exchanged for no-work jobs and contracts benefiting Madigan's associates.

The trial depicted Madigan's political operations as akin to an organized crime syndicate, intertwining public service with personal power. Despite his conviction, there have been no new ethics reforms passed targeting the General Assembly since his indictment. Senate Republicans have proposed measures for independent oversight and stricter revolving-door laws; however, these efforts have been blocked by Democratic leaders.

Senator Don DeWitte has initiated a Summer Survey seeking input from constituents on recently approved issues and unresolved topics in Springfield. The survey covers areas such as budget concerns, proposed tax increases including a $1.50 delivery tax, illegal immigration, and more. Paper copies are available at DeWitte's offices in West Dundee and St. Charles.

Governor J.B. Pritzker defended Illinois’ sanctuary state policies while testifying in Washington, D.C., amid criticisms that these policies have cost Illinois taxpayers billions of dollars. Legislation signed by Pritzker in 2021 limited cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and empowered the Attorney General to penalize police departments aiding federal officials.

Senator DeWitte also announced winners of an art contest held annually for fifth-grade students in the 33rd Senate District. Malin Doctor from St. Patrick’s School in St. Charles was named the grand prize winner this year.

A Property Tax seminar co-hosted by Senator DeWitte and State Rep. Dan Ugaste saw strong attendance last week in St. Charles, featuring Kane County Supervisor of Assessments Mark Armstrong who explained tax bill creation and appeal processes.

Upcoming events across the 33rd District include traveling office hours at various locations throughout June to October along with other community events such as document shredding drives and senior fairs.

The Secretary of State’s Office warns residents about phishing scams impersonating the “Illinois State Department of Motor Vehicles” threatening suspension of vehicle registration or driving privileges through text messages.

Additionally, Illinois Democrats have introduced a new per-wager tax on online sports bets effective July 1st, raising concerns over added financial burdens on consumers and potential impacts on the state's legal sports betting industry.
