The Elgin Police Department is making progress in its efforts to enhance professional standards by advancing through the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP). Recently, the department has moved closer to achieving Tier II accreditation.
Back in 2023, the department secured Tier I accreditation after a thorough review of its policies and procedures against 69 industry standards. This evaluation, carried out by ILEAP, focused on various aspects of departmental operations to ensure they met state-wide best practices. Following this initial success, the department set its sights on Tier II accreditation, which demands adherence to 181 criteria across administration, operations, personnel, and training. An on-site assessment took place in March 2025 as part of this endeavor.
The Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Council has now informed the department that it has been unanimously recognized for Tier II accreditation. The council stated: “The accreditation and move from Tier I accreditation to Tier II is evidence and recognition of the continued highest level of professional police service provision to the Elgin community by the leadership and personnel of the Elgin Police Department. It also is a positive reflection of the commitment of the leadership of the city of Elgin elected officials to increase the quality of life in the community by supporting policing services.”
Chief Ana Lalley expressed her pride in her team: “I am extremely proud of the members of the department and want to express my appreciation to them for their continued professionalism and dedication to our community,” she said. “The relentless efforts to pursue excellence for our community is an everyday occurrence at the department, and this achievement is another example of that dedication. I would also like to thank City Manager Kozal, Assistant City Manager Nava, Elgin City Council Members and the Elgin community for their continued support of the department."
