Illinois lawmakers have reconvened in Springfield for the final weeks of the legislative session, commencing discussions on bills recently moved forward by the House. With the General Assembly's deadline on May 31, focus will be on passing the Fiscal Year 2026 budget. Notably, Governor Pritzker has proposed the largest state budget in history at over $53 billion, despite a projected deficit. Senator Don DeWitte emphasized a priority of cutting $1 billion from programs for non-citizens in advocating for fiscal responsibility.

Senator DeWitte and other Republicans have also sought federal guidance regarding fairness in girls’ and women’s athletics within Illinois high schools. In a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, they questioned if Illinois' stance on allowing athletes to compete based on gender identity aligns with federal law or poses legal or financial risks under the federal Executive Order aimed at maintaining single-sex athletic competition.

Meanwhile, various community events in Senator DeWitte's district have been announced, including a pet adoption fair and traveling office hours. These events aim to foster community engagement through diverse activities from May to October.

Senator DeWitte recognized 373 students from the 33rd District as Illinois State Scholars, celebrating their academic achievements.

In other news, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is advocating for increased state funding for the city, with discussions expected with key state leaders. Criticism continues from Republican lawmakers on allocating additional funds to Chicago, pressing instead for financial reforms.

Senator DeWitte announced more than $74,000 in state grants awarded to libraries within the district, supporting school libraries from kindergarten through 12th grade. These funds, managed by the Illinois Secretary of State, aim to bolster educational resources such as books and technology for students.
