Geneva has once again been recognized as a "Tree City USA" community by the Arbor Day Foundation. This marks the 25th time the city has received the distinction, highlighting its dedication to effective urban forest management. The accolade is granted based on fulfilling four key criteria: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and organizing an Arbor Day observance.
Moreover, Geneva has earned its third Growth Award from the Arbor Day Foundation. This award acknowledges significant milestones and activities contributing to a sustainable community forestry program. Criteria for this recognition include forestry funding, staff training, measuring tree inventory, urban planning, planting and protecting parkway trees, and community involvement.
As part of the initiative, 77 new parkway trees will be planted across Geneva in the weeks of April 21 and April 28, depending on weather conditions. These plantings include trees requested by residents for the spring.
The effort is supported by funds raised from February's virtual Wine, Cheese & Trees fundraiser, organized by the City of Geneva's Natural Resources Committee and Geneva Park District Foundation. The funds will be used to plant trees in the city's parkways, parks, and open spaces.
Residents interested in obtaining a new parkway tree for the upcoming fall season can find more information about the city's cost-sharing program on the city's website.
