Devin Corbett, chairman of the Aurora Township Republicans, said that the March 5 hearing revealed how Brandon Johnson and other Democratic mayors cannot justify dangerous sanctuary city policies. Corbett made his statement to Kane County Reporter on March 11.

"The March 5 hearing confirmed that Brandon Johnson and fellow Democratic mayors have no real defense for their sanctuary city policies, which endanger communities nationwide," said Corbett. "Instead of addressing the surge in crime related to illegal immigration, they sidestepped accountability and relied on tired talking points. House Republicans exposed the undeniable harm these policies inflict, yet Democrats refused to acknowledge the crisis. Voters can see this reckless path Democrats have chosen and its consequences, and can ultimately hold them accountable in the voting booth."

Politico reported that Democratic mayors testified in Washington on March 5 regarding their immigration policies, facing Republican concerns about crime in sanctuary cities. According to Politico, House Republicans cited violent incidents involving undocumented immigrants to argue for greater local cooperation with federal immigration authorities, while mayors maintained no law requires such coordination. Oversight Chair James Comer criticized sanctuary policies, calling them a "public safety nightmare." Democrats responded with defensive arguments as immigration remains a major point of debate for both parties ahead of upcoming elections.

In a February 5 press release to the House Oversight Committee website, Chairman Comer said, "Sanctuary mayors owe the American people an explanation for city policies that jeopardize public safety and violate federal immigration law by releasing dangerous criminal illegal aliens back onto the streets…. policies in Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City prioritize criminal illegal aliens over the American people. This is unacceptable and their leaders must be held accountable. We will press these mayors for answers and examine measures to enforce compliance with federal immigration law."

Fox 32 reported that Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson testified before Congress on March 5 regarding the city’s sanctuary policies. The House Oversight Committee invited Johnson, citing concerns that these policies allegedly violate federal law and harm residents. Along with mayors from New York, Boston, and Denver, Johnson is expected to defend the city’s sanctuary policies during his testimony.

Corbett was first elected as Chairman of the Aurora Township Republican Party in 2024. According to the organization’s website, he is "focused on boosting Republican voter turnout, growing the Party’s membership, and communicating the Party’s positions on issues that matter to Aurora Township voters."
