On January 13, 2025, we at Kane County Reporter sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Batavia Unit School District 101. The request was specifically for information regarding the number of non-U.S. citizens, often referred to as "migrants" or "illegal aliens," currently enrolled in the school district.
The Illinois Freedom of Information Act, under which this request was made, allows for the public access to records held by public bodies. We believe that this information is crucial in providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
As a media organization, we are committed to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. We also requested a fee waiver as part of our role in disseminating information as media professionals.
