City of Geneva Natural Resources Committee met Aug. 7

Here is the agenda provided by the committee:

1. Call to Order

2. Roll Call

5. Presentation about Bird City nomination for Geneva.

6. Active Projects:

• Earth Day Event

i. Get ready for 2025.

• Eastside Fire Station Natural Landscaping Project

i. Dan Ludwig continues to monitor the plants.

• River Clean-up Day

i. The date is Sept 21st, 9 to noon.

ii. Update flyer for workday.

iii. Need two meeting locations due to work at the trestle bridge.

iv. Pick up snacks from Costco.

• Rain Barrels for sale

i. Barrels are $75 each.

• Greening Geneva Initiative

i. ICEC tree planting and dedication – Sept 22?

ii. Will have the senior center for dedication.

• Wine, Cheese, and Trees

i. 2025 is slowly sneaking up on us…

ii. Purchased one of the wines to serve – Saldo Shiraz 2021.

iii. The Library has put in a request for WCT funds to cover $5609 of new landscape.

• Gunnar Anderson Stewardship

i. Workdays are done for the season, will pick back up on October 1st.

• Elm Park Restoration Work

i. Update from Kelvin

• NRC Facebook page and Instagram

i. Updates from Mel and Rachel.

• Recycling Bins on 3rd Street

i. The bins are in place and being utilized.

ii. It has been noted that many of the recycle bins are overrun with material and need to be emptied sooner so that they are not overwhelmed with garbage as well.

• Pumpkin Recycling

i. Get ready for the second Smash in November.

• NRC Lecture Series

i. The next lecture will be about recycling and composting led by Stephanie.

ii. Saturday, Oct 26th 2 to 3pm. The title is “A Day in the Life of Plastics”.

iii. Stephanie is working to have Lake Shore at the presentation.

iv. The library will create the calendar event and take reservations on behalf of the NRC.

• Dark Sky Initiative

i. NRC to continue to promote the Dark Sky Initiative.

ii. Bill is working on a Proclamation with the City. Will be on City Council agenda.

• Tree Ordinance

i. Based on NRC recommendations, there are several sections of the City Code that need to be amended in relation to tree preservation, tree protection, and landscaping.

7. New Initiatives

• Create an education piece to reduce plastic and styrofoam at restaurants.

• Continue to support educational opportunity to move Spring leaf collection into May, not April.
