A bill that passed the General Assembly in May, Senate Bill 1400, calls for the Illinois State Board of Education to provide guidance to local school districts on student disciplinary actions such as suspensions and expulsions.

Rep. Ugaste expressed his concerns regarding the legislation: "I’m not sure why we have to pass a state law for ISBE to work with local school districts. While I am not terribly opposed to this legislation, I am concerned that these guidelines could eventually be used to usurp local control."

Lawmakers aim for Illinois to develop statewide student disciplinary guidelines.
