Earlier this week, Representatives Tony McCombie, Norine Hammond, and Dan Ugaste visited the Viper Mine in Elkhart. During their visit, they descended 300 feet underground and traveled five miles to observe active mining operations.
"It was fascinating to see the mining technology employed, including safety technology that disables machinery when a person gets too close," one of the representatives remarked.
Illinois holds 15% of the nation’s recoverable coal reserves. Despite this significant resource, the representatives noted increasing economic difficulties faced by Illinois coal mines.
